Giuseppe, italienischer Politiker, * Turin 19. 9. 1898, ✝ Rom 11. 6. 1988; ab 1925 führendes Mitglied des Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI), 1926-43 in der Emigration. 1946 war er Präsident der Verfassunggebenden Versammlung, 1947-50 und 1954-57 stellvertretender Ministerpräsident 1963-64 war Saragat Außenminister, 1964-71 Staatspräsident. - Unter seiner Führung spaltete sich vom PSI 1947 jener Flügel (»Saragat-Sozialisten«) ab, der eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Kommunisten ablehnte. Als Mitbegründer (1951) und Generalsekretär (1951-54, 1957-64, 1976) des Partito Socialista Democratico Italiano (PSDI) prägte er maßgeblich diese Partei, die nach seinem Tod rasch an Bedeutung verlor.
